Another impressive Fairford win, this by seven
wickets chasing a score of 173 which was never enough on a good batting
wicket and fast outfield against mid table Newent.
Electing to field, Birds early wicket belied
a difficult start for town as Bird and Peyman struggled in blustery
conditions, the bowlers not giving much away but unable to capitalise.
For Newent Fabian (M) made the most of a number of missed chances to
reach a streaky 5, an indifferent town fielding performance in which
Bullock and Clarke shone. Town rotated the bowling, Moreing again impressed
however Bennett also struggled with the conditions and gave way to Newport
who produced another good spell with two wickets and two quick run outs,
the innings was wrapped up by Bird who ripped out the tail taking three
wickets in the last over as Newent closed on 172.
The total was never enough and Townsend started
as if he would see town home in record time, ten boundaries against
an indifferent attack as he scored 50 out of 72 scored off the first
ten overs. Captain Leadbeater content to bat around Townsend then had
useful partnerships with by Gray then Newport. Town raced to the finish
with Greener again supplying the pyrotechnics with some explosive batting,
it was Leadbeater who was to strike the winning runs a straight driven
four to end 49 not out as town won at a canter, securing 21 points to
remain in second place.
